Brave Girl Fights Off Mobile Thief

Putting on a brave face, a 19-year-old girl on October 8, 2013 evening nabbed a miscreant who tried to flee after snatching her mobile phone. The girl identified as Swati, a B.Tech student of Chandigarh University, chased the miscreant and handed him over to the Chandigarh Police.

At 6.50 pm, Swati was sitting in a park in Sector 23, when a 27-year-old youth came from behind and snatched her phone. The accused identified as Balbir Singh, tried to flee from the spot but was chased and nabbed by the girl.

The brave girl, Swati narrated the whole incident to the police. She said, "After snatching my phone, the accused tried to run away on his cycle. I chased him and caught hold of his cycle. I slapped the accused for trying to steal my phone. I feel that many girls these days do not stand up for their rights and safety." After getting a hold on the miscreant, she called the police and got him arrested. According to Swati the police reached the spot at least 15 minutes after the call was made.

Balbir Singh hails from Uttar Pradesh. He works as a peon at a government office. A case of theft, criminal force in attempt to commit theft and of dishonestly receiving stolen property under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused with the Sector 17 police station. On October 9, 2013, Singh was produced before a local court and was remanded in judicial custody.
