To measure the magnitude of cancer problem in Punjab, PGI's School of Public Health, in association with Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, has initiated cancer registries, in which every cancer case or death due to cancer in the region will be registered with the authorities.
According to the estimates of National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP)-2011, more than 23,000 new cancer cases and over 11,000 deaths due to cancer were detected in Punjab. A team of 15 staff members will be working on the project and it is hoped that the project will help in understanding the menace of the cancer and the ways it can be put under control.
Efforts will also be taken by the staff members in bringing general public awareness of the importance of cancer registries. The team of 15 will be divided in such a manner that five of them will be covering Mohali and Chandigarh and ten will be covering the regions of Sangrur and Mansa. The staff member will be visiting hospitals and clinical laboratories to gather the information from the regions allocated to them. It has come to light that new cancer cases are occurring per 1,00,000 population and consequently, there has been a sudden hike in the mortality rates due to cancer.
