A/C Manufacturer, Local Electronics Outlet Face Penalty
October 10, 2013

A leading A/C manufacturer and a local electronics outlet have been asked to pay a penalty of Rs 15,000 for not refunding excess amount paid for a lower capacity A/C and for charging a customer for replacing a faulty stabilizer. Additionally, the UT Consumer Forum has directed Hitachi Home and Life Solutions and Utility Trading Engineers to refund an amount of Rs 16,010 to a Sector 45-A resident.

Under this particular case, Surekha Thukral, had booked a 1.5 ton capacity A/C in June 2012, but was later advised by a Hitachi engineer, who inspected the installation site, to get a 2 ton capacity A/C. Following this, she got the A/C at a cost of Rs 51,000. However, the A/C failed to function properly several times despite attempts to set it in order. It was later found that the stabilizer was defective. Thukral then had to pay Rs 4,500 for getting it replaced. Though she paid the amount, the A/C still did not function properly. The A/C was finally replaced with a lower model priced at Rs 39,990 and Thukral was assured the difference in price would be refunded soon. However, she alleged that she had not received any refund and was wrongly charged for replacing a faulty stabilizer.
