Goat and Meat Expensive Thanks to Bakra Eid
October 17, 2013

On the occasion of Bakra Eid, goat and regular meat have become expensive commodities. With goat vendors selling goats at high prices in markets of Manimajra, Mohali and Panchkula, meat shop owners in the city have increased rates of regular meat. The increase is almost four times the usual prices in some places.

While regular meat is sold at Rs 350-400 in the markets, the sacrificial goat is sold for Rs 750-800 per kg. Saleem Khan, a shopkeeper at a meat shop in Sector 45, said, "Usually the meat is sold for Rs 150-200 per kg, but on Bakra Eid this year the prices of the sacrificed goat has also increased. Now, it is only the chicken that is sold at a cheaper rate."

Mohhamad Niyaz, a goat vendor who also owns a halal meat shop in Manimajra, has been selling goats since 15 years. Niyaz said that it was the first time that he bought around 300 goats from Himachal Pradesh ranging from Rs 10,000-28,000.

The goats are usually brought from Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and villages in Punjab. The most expensive goat sold till now was from UP. It was sold for Rs 50,000. The traders say that 90 per cent of the customers look for height, weight, health and even the colour of the goat, instead of the amount.
